Al Ithihad Square
The plaza will comprise the southern end of the square including the old cannon pediment. The two ends of the square suffer from the intrusion of noise, fumes and other traffic impacts as well as being cut off from the context by vehicle dominant roads. The raised amphitheater building will provide noise buffering for the central park. The insertion of an amphitheater facing a new podium performance area will provide the opportunity for a raised area so that the southern end can accommodate one or two convenience shops and/or tourist and community information centre and animate the edge as people cross the square from the adjacent roads. The performance area will be defined by three hi-tech designed ‘wind towers’ - interpretations of traditional badghir – using ambient energy a steel and hardwood colonnade and adjacent ring of flagpoles for ceremonial events. The ‘plaza’ area between the stage and the amphitheater will accommodate a dancing fountain of jets and rivulets in the paving illuminated with laser like blue light at evening and nighttime. The plaza will connect with the major desire line crossing the square at the southern ends and connecting both sides of the original urban space including the roadways.
