Accessibility Code for the Built Environment in the Creative Clusters
In 2014, in response to H.H.Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s “My Community…. A City for Everyone’ we helped develop and launch the Tawasol initiative for what was then the Dubai Media & Freezone Authority, renamed as the Dubai Creative Clusters Authority (DCCA) in 2015. The unprecedented initiative was created by the Authority to deliver the Crown Prince’s vision for a truly inviting city accessible to all everyone regardless of physical ability.
We developed the new accessibility code for the built environment to set out new regulations and inclusive design standards for buildings and external works in all areas under the development control jurisdiction of the Dubai Creative Clusters Authority (DCCA), including Dubai Internet City, Media City, Knowledge Village and Academic City. We are honoured to be part of this ambitious initiative of the Authority and continue our commitment to making Dubai a more accessible and inclusive environment in the lead up to expo 2020.
The extensive design guidelines will be accompanied by an innovative awards system that seeks to encourage and incentivise high quality accessible development. Based on existing models of environmental sustainable awards criteria, the awards will be a badge of honour for developers, retailers or food establishments to display and welcome all guests, regardless of their physical ability.
Following the creation of the accessibility code, Place Dynamix are involved in the implementation its regulations through our involvement as accessibility consultant on the prestigious Dubai Design District D3, overseeing the overall master plan as well as the detailed design and delivery of buildings under construction.
